Grand Duchy Cosmonauts (Petits Fours)

This portrait was commissioned to commemorate the release of their first album, Petits Fours.

Cliff
pencil, acrylic, watercolor pencil and masking tape on paper
36 x 48 inches
2011
This is a portrait of Cliff Kentros, a neuroscientist who studies place memory at the University of Oregon, and a rat from his lab. The background of this piece shows a place cell grid-- the path of the rat is shown by the gray lines and the masses of yellow dots show where a particular place cell in the rat's brain fired as he remembered that location from a previous experience. In contrast to what many people think about scientists who work with lab animals, Cliff has a genuine respect, and even affinity, for the mice and rats in his lab.

Michelle (age 3)
